The Shannara Chronicles Season 2 – Review

I liked the first season of the Shannara Chronicles, I thought the plot was great, performances were strong and it had some fantastic twists that I didn’t see coming. Season 2 on the other hand was a profound disappointment. Continue reading The Shannara Chronicles Season 2 – Review

Television Train-wrecks – Marvel’s The Inhumans

Last week I binge-watched the first—and hopefully only—season of Marvel’s The Inhumans and having done so, I question the decision to keep this series part of the TV MCU but also separate from it, in the sense that it tells its own story without including any other characters from established series, even though it keeps consistent with the Inhuman portrayal on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, down to the look and colour of the Terrigen crystals. If there is one series that could’ve used a tie-in to launch its own series, this was definitely the one.

The reason for this is that while Inhumans are certainly an interesting subject in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we’ve seen some really cool ones on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the ones living on the moon under the rule of Black Bolt just aren’t that compelling, least of all the ruling family, who are sadly the central characters of this trainwreck of a show.

Let’s go over these characters and their issues: Continue reading Television Train-wrecks – Marvel’s The Inhumans

First Impression – The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Over the past year I’ve seen announcements for The Ancient Magus’ Bride on several outlets, and on subscribing to Crunchyroll—which I highly recommend as it’s cheap and you get almost every series now airing—I kept noticing them mention The Ancient Magus’ Bride and limited screenings, which confused me as to whether this was a show or a film.

But then one weekend, a week ahead of the release of the first episode of the series, I saw The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Those Awaiting a Star, the 3-episode OVA. I affected me in a way very few stories do, in both the tragic sense, as the character is but a child and the mistreatment of children, even in fiction, is one of the things that truly upsets me. But there is also so much wonder and hope and joy in the story to offset the sadness that in the end it left me smiling and wanting more of the story. Surprisingly Good TV – The Good Place

Have you ever gone through TV channels or through your Netflix account, looking at the many names of shows and just skipping over them, perhaps with a momentary judgement towards them? Maybe their names seem over the top or the logo seems silly, or perhaps even the genre is not your usual thing.

But then, one day, you’re extremely bored or you read or heard about some of those shows or films and decide, “yeah, I’ll watch the first episode,” and suddenly “how bad could it be?” turns into a day or binge-watching an entire season, or looking forward to the next week’s entry. Continue reading Surprisingly Good TV – The Good Place

One Season Wonders – Terra Nova

Are there any series out there you saw and loved, wished they had a second season but they never got one? I have several and lately I’ve been binge watching them on Netflix or whatever service I can find them in—the latest being Constantine.

There is one on Netflix which I absolutely adored and it made me sad to see its run end with no continuation, particularly considering the cliffhanger ending for the first season and the many potential stories they had to tell.

That show is Terra Nova. Continue reading One Season Wonders – Terra Nova

Binge Watching – Into the Badlands

On Saturday, an acquaintance mentioned looking at a show on Amazon Prime, Into the Badlands, and the name made me so curious I decided to watch it. And you know what, it’s pretty damn good. Continue reading Binge Watching – Into the Badlands

Favourite Japanese Media Tropes – Main Theme Insert

Lately I’ve been watching a lot of Japanese television series, from anime to Live action series and I’ve come to realise that the tropes we often refer to as “Anime Tropes” are predominant across all Japanese media, with some of it even crossing over into the world of gaming.
