Darksiders Week!

Last week, I mentioned I wanted to do a few things differently with the YouTube channel, and at some other point I mentioned I would be leaving one of the LawfulGeek Plays slots empty for a while as I wanted to do a few more edits and prepare videos more thoroughly.

To that end, and because I’m a bit impatient and want to move things along as fast as I can, I’ve decided to use this week to air the remaining episodes of Darksiders. Continue reading Darksiders Week!

Prepare your Defenses – Guides Incoming!!

I’ve been playing Overwatch for a few weeks now, and last time I spoke of the negative environment in the forums for the game, particularly about character criticisms and the idea of hero rankings. During said article, I took a few stabs at balancing out the character Genji, which as you may have noticed from my highlight videos, is my main character in Overwatch, with the big lug Reinhardt in second place.

Some of the community were instantly miffed of the suggestions about the character, as I expected them to be. It was the whole point of the thing. In reality I don’t think the character needs much in terms of balancing, perhaps just give him some invulnerability during his Swift Strike dash, but that’s out of personal preference and frustration more than anything. Review: Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure

Tablets, bird statues and a despicable human being. Of course it’s an adventure game, the latest one: Demetrios – The BIG Cynical Adventure.

The End Approaches – LawfulGeek Plays

I know the title is a bit alarming, I’m sorry about that, it’s nothing bad, but I’m finally getting close to the end of Tales of Zestiria. You might be wondering why I’m talking about it instead of just keeping things going until the last episode but this is the first of my Let’s Play series to go over 100 episodes. When I sat down to play it this weekend, after months of inactivity because of the country hop, and saw the endgame zone, I was ecstatic.

You can’t believe how long I’ve been waiting to get here. Because even if I left it very close to the end before moving, there was still so much to see to actually meet the final boss, Heldalf. Continue reading The End Approaches – LawfulGeek Plays

Overwatch Community – We need to talk…

I’ve been playing Overwatch since the Beta, and the moment the game released I picked it up and haven’t put it down. I enjoy the game a lot, but the community around it is turning into any other shooter’s community: toxic. But the design and concept of Overwatch breeds a different kind of abuse, not just the usual name calling and shaming—though that is still as rampant in this game as it is in any other online multiplayer title.

So, because I like this game a lot and want things to improve, let’s have a chat. Over the past week I’ve noticed certain trends when it comes to the Overwatch community’s responses to certain subjects, particularly to any opinion that doesn’t blindly praise the game. But let’s go over the points. You can consider this an open letter to the community.

First Look: Anima: Gate of Memories

A few years ago, an acquaintance introduced me to the world of Anima, an RPG so out there, so farfetched in its mechanics and world that “anime-like” doesn’t even come close to describe it. We never got to play it though, as there wasn’t interest in the rest of our merry band of geeks for Anima, but I went through all the books anyway, trying to make sense of them…I didn’t. The rules were a mess so even if I liked the game and wanted to play it I knew it would’ve been a nightmare to do so.

I forgot all about Anima and moved on, so imagine my surprise when I saw Anima: Gate of Memories pop up on Steam. I immediately looked at the store page and the user reviews were favourable, something not entirely common considering the festering pit of malice that are the Steam reviews these days—though still not as bad as your average YouTube comment, we can be happy about that. During Rezzed 2016—a couple of months ago, though it feels a lot longer—I played a variety of games but only one of them was a 1st person horror set in a derelict spaceship. You know System Shock 2 and Event Horizon have special places in my heart, and I love the idea of a character waking up on a ship once filled with life and laughter and now just knee deep in hell. Death and suffering around them, with people they once knew and served with now turned into hideous abominations hunting the character for their blood, or flesh, or both. Or perhaps they seek to indoctrinate them, to turn them to the cause of their dread masters.

Yeah, this is my kind of Sci-Fi Horror, the one in an oppressive environment, a metal coffin floating aimlessly through space. So with that said, you should understand how quickly a game like Syndrome grabbed me back in April. I’m, admittedly, a scaredy-cat. As much as I love this setting and as much as I enjoy watching and playing horror media, I scare very easily in them and while I don’t dive for a cushion the instant something scary pops up, I do tend to pause or even quit games and films midway through a session to calm down and relax before I tackle them again. Sadly, recording previews doesn’t give me that freedom. Because I’m doing the work for all of you, to show you the games that developers send me to test out and give my feedback on, I can’t just say “Nope!” but instead have to push on and face the fears, which is the only way to make it through alive and not soiling your trousers. MCM London Comic Con – My first ever Con!

If you asked me to describe the MCM London Comic Con, the answer would be ‘massive’. I have been to Rezzed two years in a row, and that’s a very intimate event, but even the big daddy of European gaming conventions, EGX, is tiny compared to the MCM Comic Con. There are so many people there, from organisers, artists, cosplayers and everyone else. It is absolutely massive.

This was my first Comic Con and not only was it a fantastic personal experience and I geeked out like I never have before, but it was also a monumental experience as runner/editor/writer of The Mental Attic. Why? Because I attended the MCM London Comic Con as Press. Continue reading MCM London Comic Con – My first ever Con!

Warcraft: The Beginning…and maybe also the end?

I love the world of Warcraft, the universe. I love the stories, the characters and its rich history—that is not without its retcons and mess-ups. Up until the moment I started country hopping, moving to a new place with frightening frequency (a little adventure I hope has ended), I collected and read every novel written in the universe. I enjoyed reading about the War of the Ancients by Richard A. Knaak, the man responsible for the entire Dragon lore in the Warcraft universe and many more stories. I loved reading Christie Golden’s stories on the Rise of the Horde and The Lich King. Jeff Grubb took me to Karazhan to meet Medivh and his increasingly erratic behaviour and possession by Sargeras.
