Gaming Q&A – July 2017 – Which video game has the best idle animation?

You know me, I’m always up for a good discussion, no matter if it’s games, films, TV series or even books and writing. So, when the crew of Later Levels approached me for a monthly gaming Q&A, hopefully to create some great debates around video games, it didn’t take much for me to see that it could be fun.

Every month, I’ll present you with the question and my answer. If you’d like to join, get in touch with Later Levels. The rules are simple, in fact there is only one to note: your answer must be in 100 words or fewer.

This month’s question is: Which video game has the best idle animation?

When I heard the question, I immediately knew my answer. My pick has only one idle animation, but I chose it not for the variety or the humour behind the animations, but because of its importance and significance in video game history.

My pick is the NES Mega Man. The animation is just Mega Man blinking, something relatively simple but also incredibly unique for this title at the time. In the NES era, sprites didn’t have expressions, but Mega Man blinked, he was thus more alive than any other character, and it made the little robot more human.

That’s it for my answer. What do you think? Which game do you think has the best idle animations? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Great response! I’ve just read another bloggers take and you both have awesome answers! The idle animations do add a little spark to the game when you have to answer the door or phone or something. As gamers we feel that any interaction in a game is worth mentioning!

  2. Good article! I always liked the classic Sonic ‘impatient glare and toe tap.’ It was good at establishing Sonic as a speed obsessed character as he just wanted to complete the game – no pauses, no stopping to consider the path ahead!
